Boku wa Ashita, Kinou no Kimi to Date Suru

Tomorrow I Will Date with Yesterday's You Poster

Boku wa Ashita, Kinou no Kimi to Date Suru is a 2016 movie. There are also two alternative titles in English, ‘My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday’ or ‘Tomorrow I will Date with Yesterday’s You’. This movie itself tells us a story about Takatoshi Minamiyama, an art student in university who falls in love at the first sight with a girl named Emi Fukuju. He then decided to try to talk to Fukuju. They don’t need a long time to date each other and enjoy their happy days. What Minamiyama doesn’t know is that Fukuju has a secret that changes their life.

I actually found this one accidentally and just watched it right away (like, just now). I really like the idea of the story, though I can’t say it here because it will be a big spoiler and ruin the fun. Just like other Japanese romance movie, this one also pictures how a happy couple in their ordinary days when suddenly they have to face a difficult problem. That’s the twist, and I think that this one has a great one. However, the ending might be a bit annoying for some, while for me, I think that it’s a melting happy sad ending.

One of the best things about Japanese romance movie that I prefer than Western drama is the music. It also goes the same for My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday. I think that the music really plays a great role in building the heart-felt atmosphere, and when you hear them again, you can easily reminiscing the scenes from the drama. However, the ending song is not really in my favor.

Apart from the story, I think that choosing Komatsu Nana is the right choice. She has the name, she has the talent, and she has that innocent face that really fits the story as well. Without her, I don’t think that this movie will be recognizable enough, especially abroad. That said, you could see how much I recommended this movie. Not that tear jerking, but it has a really good story.

Kimi no Iru Machi

Kimi no Iru Machi

Haruto Kirishima lives an ordinary peaceful life in the countryside before a girl from Tokyo named Yuzuki Eba suddenly moves to his house. Just as he begins to enjoy her companion, Eba suddenly left to Tokyo, leaving a lot of questions in Kirishima’s mind. Pursuing for an answer, Kirishima decided to move to Tokyo and look for Eba.

Drama. That’s all this anime is about. With only 12 episodes, the story moves along in a too fast pace.  What’s worse from an anime like Kimi no Iru Machi is that the story is too predictable. I don’t read the manga so I won’t compare them. But, I read reviews that say how the anime skips a lot of part that is in the manga. I think that explains how there are some plot holes that for me should have been told as well. Maybe more episodes will make it better actually.

There is also two episodes of OVA, one is the prequel and the other is the sequel. I don’t have much to say about the prequel, but I’m kind of disappointed as well with the sequel because they really skip a lot of things, like how suddenly Kirishima “disappears” until near the end of the story.

As for the character, Kirishima is a rather silent type while Eba is more social, though Eba has her own issue as well. Actually the characters are good, even for the supporting characters, they have just the right portion. Their characteristics are not my favorite, but they are fit for the story even with the plot holes.

Related to the characters, I thought that Kimi no Iru Machi is a pretty old anime because of the drawing. The character design is what you will find in older anime, like in early 2000s. I’m not saying that it’s bad; instead I think that it’s pretty good. They use a lot of pale color that gives a nice atmosphere to the anime, though I found some inconsistencies for the background.

Another thing that I enjoy is the opening song. Just the song btw, not those fan services shown. This is the only music that I find enjoyable, while the BGMs and the ending song is standard.

In summary, I don’t really enjoy this anime, probably because I’m not a big fan of drama and because the story is easy to predict. Still, I think that for a big fan of romance drama, this can be a good choice.

HaruChika: Haruta to Chika wa Seishun Suru

HaruChika: Haruta to Chika wa Seishun suru

Chika Homura was a top volleyball player during her junior high. However, she chose to leave it and join the Wind Instrument Club in her high school where she decides to play flute even though the club isn’t so popular. There, she reunited with her childhood friend, Haruta Kamijou, who has an opposite personality. Together, they solve mysteries around them while trying to recruit more members to compete in musical competitions.

First of all, don’t expect to have a musical anime like Hibike Euphonium. HaruChika is more focused on the ‘mystery’ part that it forgets about the ‘music’ part in my opinion. I’m not saying that HaruChika is a bad anime. I enjoy it, really. Still, what I enjoy is the mystery part, and in the end I’m not satisfied with how the music only play a small portion here.

The idea of HaruChika is actually promising: Chika wanted to start a new life by joining Wind Instrument Club instead of the Volleyball Club that she joined in her junior high and how she tries her best to recruit more members for the club so that they can join and win the musical competition.  However, her journey is not that easy because of the events revolving in her high school.

Along the way, HaruChika has too many to serve only in 12 episodes. I guess that’s the main reason of why HaruChika ended up pretty disappointing. There is music, mystery, and also a love triangle. As for the last element, I don’t have much to say because it also not the main point of the anime. Yes, it is interesting to see Haruta and Chika love the same person and show it in a different way, but that’s it.

When I see it as a mystery anime, I can enjoy most of the component of HaruChika, including the BGM that fits the atmosphere built with the story, though they are not that memorable. But, I do like the OP and ED a lot.

That eyes tho

As for the art, it is not that stunning but it is done great. Maybe it is a bit too childish, especially for Chika’s character design, yet it pictures the personality well.

Overall, I actually do enjoy this anime, but I’m still disappointed with the story, especially the ending.

Koe no Katachi

Koe no Katachi

Ishida Shouya must face a punishment to become a target of bully after he bullied a deaf girl named Nishimiya Shouko that resulted her to transfer school during elementary school. Now, Shouya is given a chance to redeem his mistake and make friends again.

At first, I am not that interested in Koe no Katachi because I thought it would be another romance anime (nope, I didn’t read the synopsis either). It also runs for 2h10m, which is pretty long for anime movie. However, after I watched it, I think that this anime is really good and I doubt that I’ll just watch it once.

Koe no Katachi is still a romance anime, and bullying is not a new theme either. But, one of the main point that makes this anime become different in my opinion is that the main character is a deaf girl. It really elevates the level of this anime and the story becomes deeper.

Koe no Katachi reminds us that bully is a serious matter. We never knew how badly people would hurt because he/she is getting bullied until we become the target. Here, we also learn that bully doesn’t affect only the target but also people around him/her.

The story is really heart warming though I didn’t cry, but I heard that many cries after watching the movie. I like how the plot of the story really brings an emotional roller coaster. I felt so many emotions during watching the movie, sadness, happiness, anger, etc.

Those who have read the manga may feel a bit disappointed because some of the supporting characters are not explained well in the movie. I haven’t read the manga and I do think that characters like Yuzuru and Nagatsuka should be explained more because they left some questions within me. Still, they only have a limited time to explain many things, and I don’t really mind with how it is done. One thing that bothers me more is the ending. I feel like it could have been done a lot better because after the ending I was sitting there like “that’s it?” after how the movie really carry me along its story.

Because it is mostly centered around Shouya, it is easy to see how he develops and changes during the movie. I think that other characters are really great in supporting the story too. The character design and the art are beautiful also with soft colors that are very touching. As for the music, I’m not very satisfied. They are good, but not the one that leave any special impression, including the ending music.

Overall, I highly recommend this movie because it is really enjoyable and I will watch it again for sure.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

Makoto Niwa is excited to face his adolescence when he moved to other town after his parents went abroad. However, what he is facing is not what seems to be normal. He discovers many eccentric characters, from his unknown cousin to a complete stranger who claimed herself as an ESP.

It is hard to make a synopsis of Denpa Onna because there are a lot of things happened in a rather slow pace. As I mentioned, there are many characters with their own uniqueness. The first episode really took my interest to watch the anime. However, due to the slow pace, to be honest, I’m kind of bored when finishing this anime.

Still, when I try to look deeper to the story, I can see some good values hidden within the story of a boy’s adolescence. The main value that can be really seen is about how people have their own uniqueness. There are so many different type of people, and somehow we can’t say whether they are right or wrong because we are not them. We don’t know what they’ve been through before meeting us.

Another value is that people change. There is this one episode that tells us about the daily routine of one of the characters. Of course I won’t go to detail because I don’t want to give spoiler. Yet, I can say that from the episode, we can see the background of the character, and how this character changes because of what happens in life.

While I got pretty bored, I won’t deny that related to the value that I spoke; there is clearly a development from the characters. However, I think that it can be seen more clearly after you watched the whole anime.

I guess that for some people that think Denpa Onna is boring, the art is what makes them keep watching the anime. I love the character design with great color palette used for the background and everything that is very enjoyable to the eye. More from the characters, personally I think that some scenes have similarities to Monogatari series because of how the characters speak and act.

As for the music, both the OP and ED are what you will find in some moe anime with a rather absurd lyrics and unique voice. The BGMs are simple but somehow it resembles the atmosphere from the anime. So, even though I’m not a fan of the music, I can say that they do great.

Overall, Denpa Onna is a light-hearted anime with a slow pace. It is good, but I don’t think that everyone can enjoy it and really see what this anime is about.
